Verse: G#m F# E B Bbm
Chorus: D# G# B F# B F# F# G#
D# G# B F# B F# F# Bbm F# G#
Bridge: G#m E B F#

VERSE
Sinä saattelit poikasi
täyteen junaan
jäit laiturille sydän
syrjällään
saattelit poikasi
et arvannutkaan
sen olevan matkansa
määränpään

Kuljit kuin sumussa
vuoden ja kaksi
odotit kirjeitä
aivan turhaan
ja olosi muuttui
vain pahemmaksi
kun näit kuinka
naapurissa surraan

CHORUS
Taivas on hiljaa
pappi puhuu, vaikka nähden
sen hiljaisuuden tähden
moni täällä itkeä saa
Taivas on hiljaa
ei se tarjoo lohdusta
helpota kaipausta
ei lämpöä se jaa
ja pappi puhuu vaan

VERSE
Pihaasi astelee
se hahmo musta
jonka jo arvasitkin
saapuvan
poikasi kaatui
ilman katumusta
ja lunasti näin
taivaspaikan

CHORUS
Taivas on hiljaa
pappi puhuu, vaikka nähden
sen hiljaisuuden tähden
moni täällä itkeä saa
taivas on hiljaa
ei se tarjoo lohdusta
helpota kaipausta
ei lämpöä se jaa
ja pappi puhuu vaan

BRIDGE
Nöyrää
kansa on ja kiittelee
köyhää
satoa kun se niitelee
jauhaa
leipää puun kaarnasta
saarnaa
kuulee olemattomasta

CHORUS
Oi, isänmaa
pappi puhuu, vaikka nähden
sen vaatimusten tähden
moni äiti surra taas saa
Isänmaa
vaadit rakkautta
ei Rokkaa eikä Sutta
voi luodit haavoittaa
näin pappi puhuu vaan

ENGLISH

The Priest is talking.

You escorted your son into a crowded train, you stayed on the platform with broken heart.
When you escorted your son you could not know, that this was to be his last journey.

You walked as in a fog, for a year and two, you waited for letters completely in vain.
And you felt worse and worse, when you saw how the neighbors were mourning.

The heaven is silent, the priest is talking, even though seeing, that for the the silence of the heaven, many here may cry.
The heaven is silent, it doesn't offer consolation, nor ease the longing, it doesn't give warmth, and the priest is just talking.

Into your yard walks that man wearing black, whose arrival you were expecting.
Your son died in war, without remorse, and thus received a place in heaven.

The heaven is silent, the priest is talking, even though seeing, that for the the silence of the heaven, many here may cry.
The heaven is silent, it doesn't offer consolation, ease the longing, it doesn't give warmth, and the priest is just talking.

The people are humble and giving thanks, while reaping the poor crops,
grinding bread from tree bark, listening to sermons about god who does not exist.

O, fatherland, the priest is talking, even though seeing, that for the demands of fatherland, many mothers may mourn again
Fatherland, you demand love, neither Rokka nor Susi, can be wounded by bullets, thus the priest is just talking.

Notes: This song tells about a mother, whose son goes to fight in the Continuation War (1941-1944). After two years of war, she gets the message that her son is dead.

The "pappi puhuu vaan" could be translated as "the priest paying lip service". That is, the priest is reading out the words from bible, but nobody, not event the priest, believes in what he is saying.

Rokka and Susi were characters in the book "The Unknown Soldier". They were based on real persons, and were both eventually "wounded by bullets" in 1944.
